Saunameister Training Update: From Books to Practice
Moving beyond the theory and preparing for the practical side of the Aufguss.
Quick update on my Saunameister training! If you saw my first post, you'll know I was looking at the medical side. Honestly, the health knowledge needed is quite detailed – more than I expected for a Saunameister. But it's good stuff, not just for the job but helpful for my own training like cycling or running.
In May, I shifted gears to the sauna knowledge itself. I went through a big guide – 159 pages! It covered everything from the history of saunas, different types of saunas and how they work, the effects on your body, how a sauna session should actually go, using different scents, and even things like keeping the place clean and basic marketing.
While the book has great info, I feel there's a piece missing: the practical side of doing an Aufguss. Like, how do you pick the right scent? What music works? How do you greet people and explain what you're doing?
And then there's the towel waving, the 'Wedeltechnik'. Watching someone do it looks easy, but some of the fancy moves need real skill. It will definitely take practice to get them right.
It was cool to finally meet some of my classmates recently. I grabbed a drink with Mareike and Birgit. We chatted about how things are going. It turns out some, like Mareike, are already really good at doing an Aufguss. Her towel technique looked amazing – definitely not a beginner! She's actually doing the course partly so she can enter sauna competitions, which sometimes require this official training.
So, what's next? Early June I have three days of practical training at Therme Erding with the whole group. I also have a written test coming up covering everything we've learned so far.
I'll make sure to keep you updated on how the practical days go and everything else! Stay tuned.
