A few weeks ago, I started my training to become a “Saunameister” (or Saunamaster). It's been an interesting ride so far, starting mostly with self-study back in April.
The first block focused entirely on medical topics, under the banner "Medical Fundamentals for Saunamasters." I have to say, it goes surprisingly deep, but it's genuinely fascinating. The main study document is a hefty 150-page PDF (I opted for digital to save some trees!). We're covering a lot:
The basics of the human body – anatomy, muscles, bones.
All about the skin.
How the heart and bloodstream work.
The nervous system and hormone system.
Kidneys, the urinary tract, and the importance of water.
Breathing and the immune system.
Even the digestive system.
Of course, it's often tied back to sauna use – like how sauna sessions affect your heart rate, blood pressure, or your skin. It's incredibly interesting information, and I can see how valuable this knowledge is, especially if you're into sports.
Right now, I'm shifting focus to the more specific Saunameister skills. This means learning about different sauna ceremonies, understanding various scents and smells used during Aufguss, and learning about their effects on people.
The next big step comes in early June. That's when I'll finally meet my study group in person at Therme Erding, which is a massive sauna and spa complex near Munich. I'm really looking forward to that. Subscribe for an update on my journey!
Speaking of the group, there are only 12 of us. I set up a Signal Messenger group early on, and it's been super helpful for asking questions about the training content. Plus, I've already gotten great practical tips, like advice on buying my first Aufguss towels (plus here). It's interesting to see the mix of people – some, like me, have IT backgrounds, while others already work in spas. For many of us, the main driver isn't necessarily to switch careers, but more about a deep interest in sauna and wanting to really understand it all.
I'm confident this whole experience is going to take my own sauna visits to a completely new level. It's a great group of people and fantastic training so far.
Your turn!
