A Year of Cycling Adventures: From Virtual Worlds to Real-World Explorations
A reflection on my cycling journey, from virtual Zwift to the Alps.
Cycling has always been a passion of mine. In recent years, I've found a way to combine my love for the sport with cutting-edge technology: Zwift. This virtual cycling platform has revolutionized my training routine, allowing me to ride with friends (each from home), compete in races, and explore virtual worlds, all from the comfort of my home. I also really love the workouts, they bring well structured training into my cycling.
Upgrading the Zwift Experience
At the beginning of the year, I took my Zwift experience to the next level by investing in the Zwift Play controllers. These controllers added a new dimension of realism to my virtual rides, allowing me to shift gears, change the and control my bike's direction with precision. To be honest, the most used feature is the so-called Ride-On Bomb - sending a virtual thumgs up to all around you.
Just recently, in November, I further enhanced my setup by purchasing the Zwift Ride Frame. This innovative frame integrates the Play controllers seamlessly, providing a more stable and immersive riding experience. Additionally, I've incorporated the Zwift Cog, which further reduces the noise of the trainer and just make the whole setup damn simple.
The combination of these upgrades has significantly improved my Zwift experience. The smooth and quiet operation of the equipment allows me to focus on my training without any distractions. The solid and responsive Play controllers make it easier to navigate the virtual world and interact with other riders.
Even during the summer months when I was cycling to work 2-3 times a week, I still found value in using Zwift for recovery rides. It's a great way to maintain fitness and explore different virtual worlds without the physical demands of outdoor cycling.
Outdoor Adventures
While Zwift has become an essential part of my training routine, I still cherish the opportunity to ride outdoors. This year, I had the privilege of participating in some incredible cycling events.
One of the highlights was the TransAlp, a challenging gravel bike tour through the stunning Alps. Together with my friends and colleagues, Manfred, Andreas, and Christian, we explored the beautiful Reschensee area and enjoyed the well-maintained cycling paths in Italy. You can watch a video of our adventure on YouTube.
Another memorable experience was the Sella Ronda Bike Day. I traveled to the Dolomites by train, taking in the stunning scenery along the way. The ride from Brixen to St. Christina was a challenging climb, but the reward was worth it. The next day, I conquered the four iconic passes of the Sella Ronda: Sella, Gardena, Pordoi, and Campolongo. I captured this adventure on video, which again you can find on YouTube.
In addition to these major cycling adventures, I also enjoyed exploring the beautiful Bavarian countryside. I at the beginning of the season, I organized the Salzschleife, a scenic bike tour that takes riders along the Salzach River. This ride offered stunning views of the Bavarian Alps and provided a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Conclusion
By combining the best of both worlds - indoor training with Zwift and outdoor adventures - I've been able to maintain my fitness and passion for cycling throughout the year. Whether I'm battling it out on the virtual roads of Watopia or conquering real-world mountain passes, I'm grateful for the opportunities to push my limits and “enjoy the ride”.
