One Year Down, Many Kilometers to Go: My Running Journey
Lessons Learned and Adventures Had in My First Year of Running
It's hard to believe it's already been a year since I started running! Looking back, it feels like a natural progression from my existing routines. I was already in a good place, consistently doing yoga and planks in the mornings, enjoying daily walks, and cycling during both summer and winter. Adding running felt like the next logical step, almost effortless in retrospect.

Here’s what I learned.
There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that there's truly no bad weather, only bad gear. Even those rainy, muddy, or snowy days in the Munich area had their own charm. Initially, my motivation was high, which helped me push through. But even after a full winter, I realized that those "bad" days were actually pretty great. They're a fun challenge, a chance to ditch the pressure of pacing, and just soak up the experience. Plus, they make for great stories and build resilience for race day.
Sure, winter days can be dull – dark, foggy, and cold. But there were surprisingly few truly terrible days. And even in the midst of winter, there were amazing moments: a rainbow appearing on a windy day, the unique quiet and the feeling of being the first to leave tracks in the fresh snow.
Gear Up and Keep Going Through Winter
My advice? Don't stop running during winter! Invest in proper gear, and consider joining a race around Christmas or New Year. The Munich Silvesterlauf and the Ismaninger Winterlaufserie were fantastic experiences for me. And definitely avoid the treadmill! The fresh air, changing scenery, and even the beauty of winter will win you over.
Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Another key takeaway: going slow is tough, but it's what makes you faster in the long run
Good Shoes are a Game Changer
Invest in good, waterproof shoes. Wet feet are no fun, whether it's from wet grass on summer trails or snow and mud in winter. And remember, good shoes don't have to break the bank. I chose Adidas Supernova GTX (Goretex) and they were just about 100 EUR.

Strength Training: Your Running Buddy
Strength training, especially focusing on core strength, complements running perfectly. While you might not become a bodybuilder, you'll definitely develop a strong, athletic physique.

Routine is King
Ultimately, it's all about routine. Running regularly and having fun is far more important than speed or distance. Find your balance, focus on your own journey, and just get out there and enjoy the run!
