My Essential Running Gear: Tried and True Favorites
Recommendations for a Smooth and Enjoyable Running Experience
As we approach the end of the year and the holiday season, I thought it would be helpful to share some recommendations for excellent running gear (see my cycling gear here) that has worked well for me over the years. Unlike my extensive cycling gear list, my running gear is relatively minimal, especially when it comes to tech gadgets.

Here are my top picks:
Garmin Forerunner 165 Music: This affordable entry-level running smartwatch has been a game-changer for me. The Music version allows me to sync my Spotify playlists, which automatically update each time I charge my watch at home with Wi-Fi. The battery life is impressive, lasting several days, although music playback does consume more power. While the data tracking is cool and the Garmin Coach plan helps me train for big events like half marathons, I mostly use the tracking to explore new routes on Strava and keep my running fun.
Shokz OpenRun Pro 2: These bone-conducting headphones are incredibly comfortable and barely noticeable while running. They allow me to hear my surroundings, which is crucial for safety when cars approach from behind. Available in two sizes, I opt for the smaller version to fit my relatively small head. The latest version now uses USB-C for charging, which is a great bonus.
Airmax Nasal Dilator: Although they may look a bit strange and invite some friendly teasing, I swear by these nasal dilators. Studies have shown the benefits of nasal breathing, so I aim to optimize my breathing, even under stress. Once inserted, these dilators make breathing much easier, and I can now complete an easy base run using only nasal breathing. However, I still rely on mouth-breathing for more intense tempo runs.
I’m happy to share these recommendations without any affiliate links, but in return, I’d love to hear about your favorite running gear secrets.
