In the lead-up to Oktoberfest 2023, I made a life-changing decision: to abstain from alcohol. Inspired by a conversation with Marco Verch, a fellow tech enthusiast (wuestenigel) and avid runner, I realized that alcohol was hindering my well-being and limiting my potential.
The timing couldn't have been more challenging. Oktoberfest, a global celebration of beer and revelry, was just around the corner. However, I was determined to break free from the societal norm and embrace a healthier lifestyle.
To my surprise, navigating Oktoberfest without alcohol was surprisingly easy. I discovered that many people were making similar choices, and there were plenty of non-alcoholic options available. I enjoyed the festivities without the negative consequences of excessive alcohol consumption.
Since then, I've continued to live an alcohol-free life. I've noticed significant improvements in my physical and mental health, including increased energy, better sleep, and reduced anxiety. I've also become more mindful of my choices and have developed a stronger sense of self-discipline.
While social gatherings often revolve around alcohol, I've found that there are countless ways to connect with others without relying on it. Instead of meeting up in a bar, which kind of is centered around the idea of ‘drinking’, I meetup in a sauna with a good friend or we go meet at a boulder place, like with Max.
As we approach the holiday season, I'm committed to maintaining my alcohol-free lifestyle. I'm excited to celebrate the holidays in a healthier and more meaningful way.
The market is growing
The beer industry is also adapting to changing consumer preferences. Non-alcoholic beer options have significantly improved in recent years. For instance, MetaBrewSociety offers a delicious non-alcoholic brew, and Augustiner's non-alcoholic Helles has gained immense popularity in Munich. This growing trend demonstrates a shift towards healthier and more mindful drinking habits.
The Science is Clear
Below a [German] YouTube video, over 1.5h, that shows how recent studies have shown that even small amounts of alcohol are very bad for you. It’s a video that I would totally recommend to watch from start to end… You will be cured from alcohol, or at least make a very conscious decision.
